Wait, what’s diatomaceous earth?

Pronounced di-atoma-ceous, it’s a naturally occurring sedimentary rock composed of the fossilized remains of diatoms, which are a type of algae that accumulates over time in bodies of water. It’s soft and easily crumbles into an off-white powder that finds use in many solutions and products, including skincare, toothpaste, medicine, and even as a clarifier for wine and beer.

To us, diatomaceous earth may just be a powder, but on a microscopic level, it’s incredibly sharp and lethal to insects. Its jagged edges pierce their skeletal bodies, causing them to dehydrate. Think of diatomaceous earth as a natural-born flea killer.

When it comes to our pets and fleas, a food-grade diatomaceous earth can be applied directly to our dogs or their environment and is effective against pests, including fleas. However, it’s important to take precautions to limit inhalation, as it can irritate the lungs and throat.
